City harbour Stade
A picturesque cityscape with many winding streets, impressive facades and old cobblestones characterise the Hanseatic city which never fails to fascinate visitors. The exemplary redevelopment of the entire old town over the last 30 years has today turned Stade into a truly picture book town. Nevertheless, the numerous shops, cafés, and restaurants, and the still inhabited historical houses ensure the town retains a vibrant feel. Stade is one of the oldest towns in northern Europe. Although today it is mainly tourists who come to the buzzing Hanseatic port, in the past this was the economic centre of the town for many decades.

The gothic vaults of Stade’s townhall, having survived the great fire of 1659, have a special place in history, too: It today counts as one of the oldest city halls in Germany.
An extraordinary region, which is home to Germany’s largest fruit growing areas and to the world heritage site that is the Wadden Sea. In front of Cuxhaven, the northern-most city of Lower Saxony, is the largest connected area of mudflats. The Kugelbake is an ideal means of orientation; the wooden navigational aid is also the emblem of the city of Cuxhaven. Simultaneously, it is the point at which inland navigation ends and the open-sea begins. Two economic sectors have developed very strongly in Cuxhaven: tourism, and fisheries and fish processing.
