City harbour Stade
You can almost always see big ships here on the long Elbe coast, the air is clear and a mild wind blows off the water. The seasons provide the rhythm of life here: in the Altes Land in spring, the orchard is in bloom, a sea of gentle pink and white blossoms makes the landscape look magical. In the summer, fat red cherries glow for the visitors, as the apples do in the autumn. The winter gives time back: the north wind blows along the dykes and hustle and bustle of life lies peacefully behind the people. Jork, Stade, Buxtehude – situated in the “wet triangle” and just a stone‘s throw from Bremen, Hanover and Hamburg. An extraordinary region which is home to the largest enclosed fruit-growing area in Germany and to the Wattenmeer national park.

Off Cuxhaven, the most northerly town in Niedersachsen, the largest contiguous area of mudfl ats can be found. Carriages bring tourists across the mudfl ats in comfort. In summer, the silky-soft sea
bed glistens in the sunlight. The “Kugelbake”, an old wooden navigation mark which is also the emblem of the town of Cuxhaven, serves as a point of orientation. It is also the point at which inland shipping stops
and the “great journey” begins. Two areas of Cuxhaven‘s economy have flourished: tourism and fishing/ fish processing.
Das "Alte Land", not only a setting but also the title of the documentary about Niedersachsen‘s orchard on the outskirts of Hamburg. In the nearby Bendestorf studio, Gordian Maugg shot the film "Der Hungerwinter". In doing so, he was following an important path in film history: "Die Sünderin" of 1950, with Hildegard Knef, is probably the best-known work from the Bendestorf studios. The director Kaspar Heidelbach found the ideal setting for the quay for the recreated Pamir ("Der Untergang der Pamir") in Cuxhaven. The two-part historical drama "Die Flucht" tells the story of the last East Prussian summer; the
scenes were filmed in the Stade/Cuxhaven region.
