Dike near Pilsum (D. Schmell)
“Moin” – that‘s Low German (plattdeutsch) and you hear it at any time of the day. Four letters that are very expressive, typically East Friesian, in fact. Big words are not used here. They couldn‘t be, because natural forces shape people‘s lives around here. A calm or a wind-swept sea, little fluffy clouds or gale-force winds. Even the trees at the side of the road bend under the influence of nature: in the hedgerow, the bare branches of the gnarled “Windlopers” rise up into the sky. In summer the area is saturated with colour: juicy green meadows, luscious yellow rapeseed fields and heavenly blue expanses. You can experience East Friesland in miniature on the islands – each has its own charm.

The gateway to East Friesland is formed by Oldenburg. The university town is now the fourth largest town in Niedersachsen. The former residence of counts, dukes and archdukes today has over 160,000 inhabitants. With a large range of cultural opportunities and green oases. Lying between the Weser and
the Ems, Oldenburg is the magnet of the North-West of Niedersachsen. Always with an eye to the future: in 2009, it was Germany‘s “Town of Science”. In the field of international film, the region is also famous. Two festivals have their origin and home here: the international Festival of Emden-Norderney and the
Oldenburg Film Festival.
Films made in Oldenburg include the following: "Schlaflos in Oldenburg", "Vier Minuten" und "Keine Lieder über Liebe". Various regions of East Friesland have provided the setting for film, such as "Deutschland nervt", "Schade um das schöne Geld", "Sportsmann des Jahrhunderts" and "Jakobs Bruder". In Neuharlingersiel directly on the coast, "Dr. Martin" has his home in the ZDF series of the same name.
