Baroque facades, Gothic edifices – then it appears: the largest medieval town hall in northern Germany. Site of the Lüneburg market place. Medieval narrowness, by contrast, in the alleys of the old town, with their renovated half-timbered houses. Lüneburg makes an impression as a setting with undamaged gables and historic squares. Situated on the edge of the romantic heathland: only rarely do you come across real shepherds. Rather, you meet rich residents of the Hanseatic towns driving their cars to their neat, thatched second homes.

To the South lies Uelzen. If Lüneburg is the savoury course, Uelzen is the sweet. Tractors fully loaded with juicy beets trundle along the main road in the direction of the local town. Here you can live in dignified contemplation. Visitors are surprised by the brightly coloured railway station, designed by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. To the West, the Hanoverian Wendland: Storm and Stress, 1968, punk. Gorleben – the place where Germany wants to bury its nuclear waste has long since become a national myth. In the typical “round” villages remote from the protests, artists live, dropouts and those pursuing alternative lifestyles in forgotten utopias.
Lüneburg is not just the location for the production studios for the "Rote Rosen" soap opera, but many scenes are also filmed in the historic old town. The town also makes a regular appearance in the NDR "Tatort" series with Maria Furtwängler. Based around the office in Neuhaus an der Elbe, the team
supporting director Hardi Sturm made the prize-winning film "Up! Up! to the Sky".Bad Fallingbostel and the surroundings were the location for the film "Der andere Junge". "Die Auflehnung", based on Siegfried Lenz, is also largely set in the region.
