Stone Quarry Piesberg
Untouched riverscape along the rivers Ems and Hase, expansive woodlands, vast moors and heaths – the Emsland is characterised by its closeness to nature. Historical wind and water mills as well as ostentatious palaces and manor houses bear witness to the region’s traditionrich history. The hunting lodge Clemenswerth, with its magnificent grounds, belongs to the most charming monuments of the late baroque period, and nowhere else in Germany are megalithic tombs from the period of 3,500 to 2,800 B.C. as abundant as here.

The Emsland possesses a good infrastructure, its location between North Sea and North Rhine-Westphalia is attractive and the region has also made a name for itself as a centre for state-of-the-art technology. Cruise ships and other vessels are built on the huge docks of the world renowned Meyer shipyard in Papenburg. Time and time again, this presents an impressive spectacle: the passage of ocean giants through the narrow Ems canal all the way to the sea.
The town of Osnabrück with its 164,000 inhabitants is situated on the southern edge of the region, and this is where the European Media Art Festival (EMAF) takes place every year in April. The internationally renowned festival exhibits the works of famous media artists, and also presents innovative works of emerging talents from the academies.
