Stone Quarry Piesberg
Giants from the Emsland – as the imposing cruise ships are known – that are built in Papenburg at the Meyer shipyard and are moved along the narrow Ems canal to the sea. Between endless expanses and grazing cattle. The white luxury steamers with resonant names like “Brilliance of the Seas” or “Pride of Hawaii” appear like a mirage between the narrow dykes. Earlier, the Emsland was regarded as the poor house of Germany since it did not have much to offer, apart from the many moors for peat cutting. Today it‘s different: the infrastructure has been developed, the location between the North Sea and North-Rhine Westphalia has become attractive.

On the southern edge of the region lies Osnabrück. It became famous as the town of peace and its Romanesque cathedral and Baroque castle, together with the historic old town, give the impression of an ancient place. With the European Media Art Festival (EMAF), which takes place every year in April in Osnabrück, it shows its links to film and the arts. Here, media artists and innovative works by new maestros from the academies find an important forum for international media art.
"Die Eisbombe", a prize-winning final film by Oliver Jahn, was made in Meppen, among other places. The adventures of Captain Kork, Spick and Kauhdoktor Pulle from "Apparatspott – Dat mokt wie gestern", a sci-fi parody in “Plattdeutsch”, were made in Diepholz and the surrounding area.
Osnabrück was home to famous artists like Felix Nussbaum and the writer Erich Maria Remarque. Thus, the town was also the setting for the TV biographies "Felix Nussbaum – Der Maler mit dem Judenstern" and "Remarque – Sein Weg zum Ruhm". The Ems town of Haren provided the location for an episode of "GG19", the ambitious film project about the German Basic Law.
