With 250,000 inhabitants, Braunschweig is the largest city in the area between Hannover and Berlin, and is today, as it has been historically, an important centre of the region in eastern Lower Saxony. The lion city owes its present-day profile to its proud history, the continuous steady development as a dynamic location for business and trade, for science and research, as well as a broad cultural offering.

Since 1986, Braunschweig has been home to the “International Filmfest Braunschweig” with a supra-regional reach and an international profile.

Not far away from historical Braunschweig lies a town in the style of the “German Economic Miracle”, Salzgitter: rich in contrast and characterised by the post-war economic upswing. Industrial backdrops are in close proximity to Lower Saxony’s half-timbered facades, palaces, and castles. This combination characterises the region.

Equally young and modern, the town of Wolfsburg is seen as one of the most notable urban developments of the 20th century, and in 2008 it celebrated only its 70th birthday. Right in the middle, embedded in an impressive park and lagoon landscape, is the “auto city” of automobile manufacturer VW. The Allerpark, situated in the centre of the city has countless activities on offer in the sports sector, and with its 29-hectar artificial lake is also an attraction for water sports fanatics. 

The region Braunschweig / Wolfsburg lies in the northern foothills of the Harz and the north German plain, on the northern edge of the German Mittelgebirge with its rolling oothills to both sides of the river Oker.
